The Amazon Kindle DX

With the launch of Amazon’s Kindle DX electronic reader it looks as though small is no longer beautiful The Kindle DX comes with a 9.7 in (24 cm) screen which is almost 4 in (10 cm) larger than their current Kindle e-book reader.

With the DX, two major markets, newspapers and text books. The problem with smaller ebook readers is that whilst they are fine for many books they not so good for text books that contain charts and graphs. The Kindle DX with its larger screen is ideal for these types of publications. A swell as textbooks the larger screen is also suited to highly formatted information found in cookbooks and computer related publications.

One area where Amazon hope the Kindle DX will come to the forefront is electronic newspapers. Already The New York Times and The Washington Post offer a subscriber service that delivers the newspaper directly to the Kindle DX using the cell phone network.

The Kindle DX has a memory that is large enough to store 3,500 e-books which can be purchased and downloaded directly from Amazon. Currently there is over a quarter of a million titles a available.

The new electronic reader has some very useful features for text book readers. It provides the capability of annotating or highlighting text. It is also possible to bookmark specific pages or to switch pages to landscape view.

Joe Bezos , the founder of Amazon said at the launch of the Kindle DX that “Cookbooks, computer books and textbooks and anything that is highly formatted will shine on the Kindle DX”.

As part of Amazon’s ongoing trials Princetown students are to be given Kindle DX readers as part of a trial this autumn. However many students appear to be sceptical of the new technology. Among the problems students have is the fact that for some work you need ready access to four or five different textbooks at the same time. Cost is also going to be another factor for hard pressed students because at $489 it is hardly cheap.

Amazon is currently only available in the USA although it is expected to be available worldwide later this year.

The Amazon Kindle is a neat little gadget that was recently
released, and has been garnering a lot of attention from
bibliophiles and gadget addicts all around the world. While
there are some obvious reasons for why the Amazon Kindle is a
neat little toy, there are a myriad of other factors that make
the Kindle well worth the purchase that most people have not
actively addressed. Are you thinking about buying the Kindle
wireless reader for yourself, or someone else in your life? If
you are not yet sure whether or not the Kindle will make an
excellent gift for yourself or someone else, keep reading.

1. The Kindle may seem like an expensive gift for yourself, but
in the long run you are actually going to observe significant
savings by using it because downloading books in electronic
format for the Kindle is much more cost effective than
purchasing paperback editions.

2. Rather than driving all the way to a bookstore or library to
get the book you want, or waiting for a week for it to be
delivered, you can download eBooks from Amazon in less than a
minute after purchasing them.

3. Purchasing and using a Kindle for your reading is a lot more
eco-friendly than purchasing paper books, which means by using a
Kindle you are helping the environment while getting your
reading fix.

4. The Kindle is excellent if you travel a lot, take public
transportation, or otherwise have a lot of downtime to spend
reading. Rather than carry around a number of heavy books,
fussing with newspapers, or looking desperately for worthwhile
reading material, you can simply bring your Kindle along for the
ride.

5. The Amazon Kindle doesn’t only deliver books, but it also
delivers news so your Kindle can help you keep in touch.

6. The Kindle wireless reader does not require fees to allow
you to browse the internet.

7. The rechargeable battery that the Kindle comes equipped with
can last you for several days, and you can still continue to use
the Kindle even while it is in charging mode.

8. The Kindle also allows you to move plain text files and mp3
files onto your device so that you can listen to music while you
are reading on it.

9. The Amazon Kindle wireless reader is light weight and
extremely user friendly and easy to navigate. It works using
page turning from right to left, rather than forcing you to
scroll up and down.

10. If you know someone who claims to have everything, the
Kindle is an excellent gift. And if they already have one, you
can always purchase some electronic reading material for them.

The price on the Amazon Kindle may be a little steep, but if
you are an avid reader or simply need a portable device to pass
the time on public transportation or between classes, the Kindle
is definitely well worth the investment. It is a great little
gadget that can come with you everywhere, so no matter where you
are at, you always have excellent reading material at your
fingertips.

Can I transfer a document like a book from one Kindle to another?
I was wondering if this is a limitation of Kindle…

If you buy a Kindle book from Amazon, you cannot transfer it to another Kindle. It is a limitation of the Kindle.

I have a few .prc ebook files that I use on an Amazon Kindle reader. I want to edit some of the files, meaning I want to edit in and out some text. Are there any freeware programs that allow you to edit existing .prc files? I'm not looking to create .prc files. I'm looking to edit and alter existing .prc ebook files.

It depends a bit on what kind of .prc file it is–mobi & palmdoc use the same extension, and they're different filetypes.

At worst, there are .prc extractors, that will let you convert it to something else, edit the something else, and convert it back.

SiEd lets you edit things in the Palm OS - http://www.freewarepalm.com/docs/sied.shtml

Amber Palmdoc Converter lets you change it to an html or rtf file where you can make changes - http://www.processtext.com/abcpalm.html

If it's a mobipocket doc, http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/MOBI has advice about it, and the forums at Mobileread have plenty of advice on doc conversion, editing, and ebook creation.

I want one so bad because I love to read, and I'm always traveling with my family. But wow, what's with the price? I mean it'd be very helpful on studying and reading assignments and such, but the price makes me wince..haha. But I'd really like one. Does anyone know where I may find a lower cost on the kindle than amazon?

I agree, the price point is WAY too high. If they really want to cause a revolution in the book market they should price it at $99.99, shipping and tax included.

As it is, you can get an entire Netbook for that and it can do a lot more… not as convenient for reading books, though.

Does that mean that you don't have to pay for any books you buy on it?

All details are on their home page

Nothing over 400$, is the kindle good?

the Kindle is great, got one for Christmas, I absolutely love it!

Nope. The Kindle supports ONLY Kindle-format ebooks sold by Amazon.com, no PDFs or any other format. It's been getting mixed reviews, mostly negative. I'm a hard-core bibliophile and a regular Amazon.com shopper, but I am not not NOT going to be getting a Kindle. It's not worth it.
