I need a portable e-book reader for reading out of copyright books which are available from Project Gutenberg and Internet Archive. I find reading long texts from a big computer screen very tiresome and I want to save the money it would take to buy ridiculously expensive print-on-demand editions. These e-books are usually available in plain text format, so I need a simple portable reader which I can easily upload these on. It would need to have a clear, easy-on-the eyes display and a screen at least 6″ tall (preferably 7 or 8). Do you think you can recommend me something like that? I’m really quite clueless when it comes to these modern gadgets so any advice would be much appreciated.

I have been using the Sony eReader. £200 from Waterstones. Works fine with Plain text files. I had loaded some Gutenberg texts on a SD card, with the eReaderStraightt out of the box I just put the card in an 5 minutes later was reading. The screen is onlky 5″ high , but that means it will fit a coat pocket.

There seem to be three on the UK market, and I am tempted to buy one. Can anyone with personal experience tell me how they find using these gizmo’s? avondrow. Your sub-laptop maybe portable, but what is the battery life? As for the PDA, surely the screen is too small for prolonged reading?

I agree with caring carer. I have a Sony, and I love it. It’s very easy to download public domain books. Depending on the type of file, you can enlarge the font on the screen. The internal memory is about 200MB, which is plenty of space for nearly anything you want to read. I too have yet to figure out the downloading music, or audio books, part.

I have a motorola Q and using an ebook reader. The sentences are choppy and lines are broken.Any help is appreciated.

Which ebook reader are you using? I’ve found that most of them aren’t very good. Microsoft has a good reader, however: http://www.microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.mspx

I’m looking for - Pdf compatability as most scientific journals come in this format. - Newspaper subscription would be a bonus but not a requisite - Access to big online store such as the kindle (or anything similar) - Some kind of Wireless connectivity (so i can shop for books on the go) - Possibly the ability to annotate (an uber bonus!!!) - Must be able to display pictures (as again alot of my reading is scientific journals - colour would be a bonus) - Decent memory -Back up/syncing with laptop compatibility Is there a device that meets most if not all of my needs and do you have any general advice? I believe i said PDF compatability!!! which the kindle doesnt have, also i am in the UK so the kindle is not an option at all!!!
My guess is that you’ll need an actual laptop; I don’t think any of the current ebook readers do all of that, exactly. However, http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix is a big chart of e-Ink readers, and http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix is a comparison chart of LCD displays. Of them, only 1 has a color display; I don’t know how much that affects your decision. The iRex Digital Reader sounds closest to what you’re looking for, but I’m not sure it’s got all those features. (I have a Sony Reader and am much less certain of the features of all the other ebook readers.) The iRex readers may not have access to “a store,” but they do have wifi, and probably can download from any standard ebook store. Most ebook readers can read PDFs–poorly. PDFs that are formatted for letter-size paper or even book-sized (generally A5 or so) are big for the ebook readers, so they either show up with very tiny text, or are reformatted, which can lose things like charts or pictures. The forums at Mobileread.com can probably help you find out what’s available, and if there’s a device or a selection of them that suits you.
