igot an email from the book shop i shop at, im told that they are used for reading text versions of books. Thing is the one advertised seems good but for 199 pounds seems a little expensive, is there a cheaper one with good battery life ect?

Get a PDA instead. You can get them for similar prices, and they do other stuff too.

199 pounds is comparable to about 400 dollars Canadian and that's about what most of the e-Book readers retail for here.

Have you take a look at Amazon.com's Kindle reader? That was the one I was really interested in and about 350.00 USD.

Personally, PDA's can be cheaper but they get bogged down memory wise and start running slower the more that you have on sync. I'm going to hold out a while and see if this stuff will come down in price a bit… I really just hope that if I wait long enough Apple will come out with a reader that I could use… I like my PC but my Mac is the best piece of machinery that I have ever owned, and I would prefer owning an Apple product over another… Call me biased, but I love my Mac!

    Good luck and happy reading!

I use a Pocket PC. The advantages: backlight, I can read any format ebook I want, I control the font size, plus I can connect to the net with it, it has Word installed, etc. It cost me less than $350. It's outdated now (I got it 5 years ago) so I am looking at the Sony e-reader which I prefer to the Kindle (as Kindle only reads Kindle format). Here's some info: http://www.amazon.com/E-reader-Portable-Silver-E-book-Approx/dp/B000WPXQ2M

I'm just about convinced that the Sony E-Reader is the way to go. The Kindle has some nifty features, but then I'm stuck with Amazon.

Yes, they're a bit expensive, but if you read obsessively and buy books frequently, I can see where it might pay off. E-books are generally slightly less expensive than their paper counterparts.
