The Gutenberg Project is the first one that comes to mind.
Next, Google Books.

For the price of a hard copy book, but the convenience of staying at home, you can also check out Ebooks.

Wow, this seems to be a question everyone is asking, well honestly, no sane person would hand out copyrighted material for free, why? because they want to make money, so yes you can download copyrighted material and yest you can download it for free, will it be legal? no, so just debate this, do you want it to be legal, or do you want it to be free? if you want it to be legal, you have to buy it, or if you want it to be free, torrent it, Google is your friend.

Edit: @ paul_the_mediocre: Your reading comprehension skills seem to be mediocre alright… He wants material OUT OF copyright, i.e. books that are so old that they have gone into the public domain.
