E-book readers are specially designed devices for reading electronic pages or documents. Sometimes e-book reading software programs are known as e-book reader. With the help of e-book reading software, you can change your laptop or personal computer into an e-book reader device. E-books are a particular type of electronic documents.
They are equivalent to printed paper books. E-books are extremely popular among the regular internet users for many reasons. Earlier the use of e-books was just limited. They were used by software developers for documentation of any software program and sometimes they were used as manual books of any hardware device. Now, E-books publishing has a huge market allover the world and many information technology based companies around the world are doing the business of e-books publishing. Selling e-books is a good profitable business.
In the year 2007, world’s largest online bookseller company, Amazon.com launched an e-book reader in the USA. This device is known as Amazon Kindle. It is an expensive gadget and you can use this only in America. A special Network is essential to use this e-book reader. You can access more then eighty eight thousand e-books using Whispernet.
This network is available only in the USA. Kindle is a portable e-book reader and you can transfer data from your PC to e-book reader using the USB 2.0 port of this device. It has the expandable memory option to store more e-book files from your computer hard disk. This devise support almost all kind of text files like .txt, .PDF, .doc (Microsoft word), and HTML files. I need a portable e-book reader for reading out of copyright books which are available from Project Gutenberg and Internet Archive. I find reading long texts from a big computer screen very tiresome and I want to save the money it would take to buy ridiculously expensive print-on-demand editions. These e-books are usually available in plain text format, so I need a simple portable reader which I can easily upload these on. It would need to have a clear, easy-on-the eyes display and a screen at least 6″ tall (preferably 7 or 8). Do you think you can recommend me something like that? I’m really quite clueless when it comes to these modern gadgets so any advice would be much appreciated.

I have been using the Sony eReader. £200 from Waterstones. Works fine with Plain text files. I had loaded some Gutenberg texts on a SD card, with the eReaderStraightt out of the box I just put the card in an 5 minutes later was reading. The screen is onlky 5″ high , but that means it will fit a coat pocket.
There seem to be three on the UK market, and I am tempted to buy one. Can anyone with personal experience tell me how they find using these gizmo’s? avondrow. Your sub-laptop maybe portable, but what is the battery life? As for the PDA, surely the screen is too small for prolonged reading?

I agree with caring carer. I have a Sony, and I love it. It’s very easy to download public domain books. Depending on the type of file, you can enlarge the font on the screen. The internal memory is about 200MB, which is plenty of space for nearly anything you want to read. I too have yet to figure out the downloading music, or audio books, part.
I’m looking for – Pdf compatability as most scientific journals come in this format. – Newspaper subscription would be a bonus but not a requisite – Access to big online store such as the kindle (or anything similar) – Some kind of Wireless connectivity (so i can shop for books on the go) – Possibly the ability to annotate (an uber bonus!!!) – Must be able to display pictures (as again alot of my reading is scientific journals – colour would be a bonus) – Decent memory -Back up/syncing with laptop compatibility Is there a device that meets most if not all of my needs and do you have any general advice? I believe i said PDF compatability!!! which the kindle doesnt have, also i am in the UK so the kindle is not an option at all!!!
My guess is that you’ll need an actual laptop; I don’t think any of the current ebook readers do all of that, exactly. However, http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix is a big chart of e-Ink readers, and http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix is a comparison chart of LCD displays. Of them, only 1 has a color display; I don’t know how much that affects your decision. The iRex Digital Reader sounds closest to what you’re looking for, but I’m not sure it’s got all those features. (I have a Sony Reader and am much less certain of the features of all the other ebook readers.) The iRex readers may not have access to “a store,” but they do have wifi, and probably can download from any standard ebook store. Most ebook readers can read PDFs–poorly. PDFs that are formatted for letter-size paper or even book-sized (generally A5 or so) are big for the ebook readers, so they either show up with very tiny text, or are reformatted, which can lose things like charts or pictures. The forums at Mobileread.com can probably help you find out what’s available, and if there’s a device or a selection of them that suits you.

When people say that they have no interest in reading an ebook, what they actually mean is that they do not want to sit and read a long work on a computer screen. But with a dedicated ebook reading device, such as the PRS-505 from Sony, reading an ebook becomes an excellent experience. The main difference from a computer screen provided by the Sony ebook reader is the e-ink technology that supports the reading screen. The e-ink system allows for low power usage and (here’s the big one) comfortable reading. The text is crisp and clear and can be read without eye strain for long periods in both artificial and natural light. Unlike the screen of a laptop computer, the screen of the Sony ebook reader has no glare in sunlight. Essentially the reading experience will feel exactly like looking at the pages of a book. Indeed, upon becoming absorbed in a novel, I have found my thumb seeking to physically turn a paper page because my brain assumed I was holding a book.
The user interface for the Sony PRS-505 is also easy to learn and use. I was able to quickly figure out the bulk of the system’s navigation without consulting the instructions. Figuring out how to move between ebook titles and navigate within ebooks took only moments. The menu choices are obvious and make sense – very refreshing in a gadget! No baffling cell phone weirdness here.
The navigation within an ebook is well laid out. You can access the table of contents and go directly to specific chapters within the ebook. You can also simply “begin” the ebook and page through from the beginning. The nicest feature is the “continue reading” choice, which automatically takes you to the last place you were reading in the ebook. This is exceedingly handy for someone like me who is chronically plagued by gremlins (both real and imagined) that take bookmarks from my paper books.
Additionally, the ebook reader has a bookmark button that allows you to mark any page in the ebook. Bookmarks that you make for any particular title are stored within that title’s menu where you can easily access the pages you marked for later review.
The system to interface your ebook reader with your desktop or laptop computer is also easy to use. This ebook library management software allows you to load files from your computer or access the Sony ebook store online. Because you can easily load files from your computer, you are also free to obtain ebook files in compatible formats from any source.
The Sony ebook reader connects to the computer with a USB cord. When connected, the ebook library interface will add the reader to its display and you can easily add ebooks from the computer library to the reader by dragging and dropping the files. In the same way you can remove ebook files from the portable reader by dragging the files back into the library.
About my only criticism of the Sony ebook reader is that the little buttons for advancing the pages lack perfection. I find them a little stiff and the positioning of both of them is not an optimal fit for my hands. This may not be the case for all users because I am admittedly an ergonomically difficult personality. The Sony ebook reader does have two ways to advance pages, so one or both of the options may work well for other users.
As with most specialized gadgets, you will need to know where to get content for your Sony ebook reader. Certainly, Sony has its own ebook store integrated with the system, but other sellers such as Baen.com and Fictionwise.com serve the Sony ebook reader market as well. Ebook titles from small publishers and individual artists are also plentiful.
For example, my free fantasy ebook Union of Renegades from Brave Luck Books is available to download in the Sony compatible ebook format and many other popular formats, including the Kindle. http://www.braveluck.com
